Oatmeal is yummy!

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Cavan hasn’t been a big fan of rice cereal so we decided to try him on oatmeal cereal (with banana flavor).  He loves this stuff!  So far he’s tried applesauce (Cavan says yum), pears ( Cavan says they’re pretty good), carrots (Cavan says he could live without carrots), Sweet potatoes (Cavan could live without them), and Peas (Cavan says yum!)

We’ve been looking at jumperoos for him.  I’ve been hoping to find a good condition used one since Cavan is in the stage right now where he’s outgrowing everything pretty quickly.  Mommy and Daddy also want to get a cheap video camera since Cavan changes so much every day.  We’d love to be able to send videos to his grandpas!  The video camera has to wait until we get him a new carseat though (I think we’re going to go with the Evenflo Triumph Advance, not as good as the Britax but much cheaper and with good safety ratings and it comes pretty highly recommended on the car seat safety forums.)  I swear I think he’s been munching on spinach and miracle grow by the way he’s growing!

We need to put up some new pictures of Cavan!  I’m ashamed to say that since I started work we haven’t taken any new ones - we need to catch back up because he changes so much week by week that I hate the thought of not having pictures!  Right now I work part-time, but 6 days a week.  I get mornings with Cavan and then a couple hours after I come home at night before he goes to bed.  My job isn’t bad, but it doesn’t pay the bills and it’s not what I went to school for.  I’m really hoping I get the job in Maine (we should know by August), it wouldn’t pay a lot at all, but it’s a year long contract and after that I’d have the experience I needed to get a job in my field.  I’ve considered substitute teaching, it would pay much more than I make right now and the experience would be great for my resume, but it wouldn’t be a steady income since they just call in the morning if they have a job for you.  So, right now I’m trading experience and income for stability.

Last weekend my friend Beth came over to meet Cavan.  He had fun playing with her and she brought him some goodies.  She bought him a super-cute outfit for 12 months old, but he’s already very close to fitting into it!  He wears the little dinosaur sunhat she gave him almost every day since he has pale skin like Mommy.  Beth is going to have a baby boy too, so Cavan sent her home with a big box of stuff he outgrew.  I went through his closet again the morning she came and put a few more outfits in the box, and then yesterday I was trying to find him an outfit and I noticed that he must have grown some more since some of the stuff that fit two weeks ago looks very small now!  Time to start another box for Aiden!

Cavan has become mister wriggly worm lately.  He’s trying very hard to crawl but still can’t get that chubby tum up off the ground.  This morning he was scooting backward across the floor, he’s still not very good at forward scooting!  Cavan has also decided he loves to watch the bunny rabbit.  This morning Misha hopped over and sniffed Cavan’s nose while Cavan was doing push ups, which of course sent Cavan into giggle-fits.   Yesterday morning Misha was hopping around on the couch while Cavan was laying there, Cavan kept trying to touch him but Misha is too fast (for now!)  Cavan loves his bunny rabbit!

We’re mobile!

Cavan has been able to roll over from back to tummy and tummy to back for awhile now, but recently he discovered that he can use this to travel.  Whenever we lay him on his back he always flips over onto his tummy and pushes up with his hands - he’s happy to look around.  In the last couple days he has discovered that he can roll several times to get to a different spot in the living room and be closer to his toys or anything else he finds worthy of investigation.

This morning before work we were downstairs and Cavan flipped over to his tum.  The bunny caught his eye and he started trying to push himself forward to get close to the bunny.  Poor Misha is going to be in trouble when Cavan figures out how to crawl!  Luckily, Cavan’s belly is a bit too big for his muscles and he can’t hoist it off the floor just yet, but that’s not for lack of trying!

Last Saturday we went to the beach in Muskegon while visiting my Dad.  We let Cavan put his feet in the sand and he thought it was absolutely hilarious.  Then we sat for a long time on a swing and watched the waves, I think he enjoyed it.  Unfortunately, we forgot the camera and my Dad’s ran out of battery, so no pictures.

We have some pictures of Bathtime (AKA Super-Fun-Happy-Fantastic-Time) to upload, Shannon will get those up as soon as he has a chance.

4 months old!

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Cavan is now officially 4 months old! He had his 4 month well child checkup with his pediatrician yesterday. He scored ahead in his development, which they expected because he is apparently a giant. The receptionist, the nurse, and the doctor all commented on how big he was - he measures in at a whopping 26 inches long and 18.5 pounds!

He got more shots, and he handled them really well. When he felt the pokes he gave a big old tomato-face scream, but between the pokes he calmed down. There were 3 in total, poor baby. After the pokes I picked him up and he turned his head and watched the nurse across the room and gave her a look that said something like “and to think, I thought you were a nice lady!”

He was in a great mood, even after the shots. The nurse kept commenting on how good he was and he was chatting up a storm to anyone who would look at him and tossing flirty smiles around to everyone.

Cavan is now at the length limit for his car seat, and darned near the weight limit too. This means we’re going to have to buy a convertible car seat since he can’t face forward until he’s a year old but he’s too big for the “bucket seat” that he has. Thank goodness I start work soon, it seems a good portion of my first paycheck will be going toward a new car seat for my big boy. I guess we probably should have just bought a convertible car seat to begin with, but I honestly expected the bucket seat would last until close to a year! The good news is that the convertible car seat faces rear for now, and when he’s older it turns around and faces forward. He should be able to use it for quite awhile!

Cavan has also gotten the go-ahead for cereal and stage 1 foods, in fact the doctor said he was more than ready.  I’ll try to get a video of him trying some, he’s not sure what to think about his cereal just yet.  He watches us eat and grabs at everything trying to pull it into his mouth, so I think trying new foods for him will be a lot of fun.

Swingin’ Free

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Since we found out Cavan liked the swing in the park the other day so much, we took him out today to the little play area in our apartment complex to try out the swing there. And this time we brought the camera… He’s a little small in the swing, but he’s secure and he absolutely loves it.
