First Steps

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Just a quick update to let everyone know that Cavan took his first unassisted steps on Christmas day! He let go of the couch and took 3 steps toward me before launching himself into my lap. More pictures coming soon!

Almost a year!?

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

I can not believe that Cavan is almost a year old already. It seems like he went from being a bundled up pile of baby into an all out toddler overnight!

The boy has a mind of his own, that’s for sure. We have a baby gate that we cut a small hole in for the animals to go through. The baby gate is no longer enough to restrain him. A couple weeks ago he was next to me playing at the gate while I was doing something on the computer, the next thing I know I hear a *crash!* and I look over to see Cavan, sitting there with the baby gate around his waist. He somehow managed to squeeze through the hole for the animals, but got stuck halfway through and pulled the gate off the wall. I wish I would have gotten a picture!

The animals are no longer safe. They’re learning to be aware of Cavan, that’s for sure - they like to sleep on the bed together and if Cavan gets it into his head he goes into our bedroom and terrorizes them. Mind you, to do this he has to crawl down the hall, around the corner, into a dark room, and then stand at the side of the bed yelling and laughing at them. If they don’t move quickly enough, they get grabbed.

Cavan can now walk really well (while holding onto our hands for balance.) I don’t think he needs our hands at this point, since he can stand by himself now, but he hasn’t figured out that he doesn’t need us yet. He has a push toy that he can stand behind and walk while pushing, and today was the first day that he actually went over to it, stood up behind it, and drove it around the living room all by himself.

I’m getting over a cold, and I have a little cough left. Whenever I cough Cavan stops what he’s doing, sort of jumps, and crawls over to me at breakneck speed. Once he gets to me he holds onto me like he’s afraid I’m going to puff up into a cloud of smoke or something. It’s not even a bad cough, I might understand if I was hacking up a lung, but even the slightest “kuh” makes him hug me. It’s pretty darn cute.

Cavan also had his 9 month appointment (a month late since it was a new doctor). He is now 30 inches tall and 25 pounds, a big boy! I’ve been realizing lately how tall he’s getting, just a few minutes ago I was peeling potatoes for dinner and out of the corner of my eye I saw a little hand reach up and grab one of the peels. He turned it over a few times, tasted it, and then threw it on the floor. Apparently raw potato skins are not to his liking. He is also eating pretty much everything now. The only things we don’t allow are honey, dairy (he’s allergic but I suspect he’ll grow out of it like I did), nuts, and sweets are very limited. Other than that, he really enjoys trying new foods. He now eats big boy oatmeal in the morning instead of the baby kind, has whatever I’m having for lunch, and has pretty much the same thing as we do for dinner.

First Haircut

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Cavan got his first real haircut on Saturday (”real” meaning not done by Mommy and not looking like he stuck his head under a lawnmower.) We went to a place called Kid Snips, and here’s the story! Remember to click the pictures to make them bigger!

Cavan checks out the car chair…

And the verdict is: “I like it!”

Watching the lady cut his hair in the mirror. (Notice the smock that is later gone because mister grabby hands kept pulling it off)

“That tickles!”

Beep! Beep!

“Can I have one of these at home Daddy?”

The stylist put bed-head into his hair… He didn’t quite know what to think about that.

All done and ready to cruise on outta there!

Parade of Lights

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

About 2 weeks ago the city of Chicago put up lights, but didn’t turn them on. We happened to notice a bunch of kids out and about one day, so we thought we’d go check it out (this is the advantage to living downtown.) It turned out that the lights parade was that evening, so we bundled Cavan up and went to see it!

It was pretty neat, Mickey Mouse headed it up and as he went by each block he waived his magic wand and all of the lights in the trees turned on. The Cheetah Girls were there, and Justin Roberts (a children’s music guy), but Cavan liked the big balloons best of all. It was dark, so we didn’t get very many good pictures, but here are a couple:

Cavan’s all bundled up and waiting for the parade!
